I’m always intrigued by buildings that have barely survived removal via eminent domain. Â They give a fair indication of other structures that were not so lucky. Â One of the most handsome in the city is the former Standard Oil Company Building, now home to Entheos Architects on Lord Street in Fletcher Place.
The structure stands out in a sea of parking and pavement:
This pic shows just how little margin for error there was in the decision to retain the structure:
Here’s a bonus pic of a great empty house, just to the south on Harrison Street:
I totally found this building last fall too. It’s such a great little building.
Nice post. Standard Life built another great building over on Fall Creek in 1952. In the very modern International Style. Now the Julia Carson Government Center.
I’ve always wondered the original use of the Carson Center’s structure. Good to know!
Is Standard Life related to Standard Oil Company? This wikipedia entry on S.O.C doesn’t mention it.
