Ah, the old corner store. Â This is the building that you always see old photographs, where the man is dressed up with a tie and apron, standing on the corner; and a boy is sweeping the sidewalk. Â This is on the northwest corner of 17th and Bellefontaine on the near north side:
You should really start breaking into places if you want this blog to go somewhere.
There are some blogs like that, especially about Gary. Really beautiful and sad.
That northeast corner building looks like a many-times remodeled gas station/garage. There are similar buildings all over the old parts of town; the ones that come to mind are at Sherman & Michigan (SE corner), 30th & Clifton (SE corner), Mass Ave. & Dearborn (SE corner), Sherman & New York (NE Corner). The one at Sherman & Michigan has not been altered much, if at all, and still houses an auto-related business.
It looks like it would make a good ice cream shop.
I am new to this site and was wondering how do I find the community leaders and how can I volenteer to support the efforts to make east 10th a safer and more productive enviornment.
You may want to try Great Indy Neighborhoods.
Investigate the East 10th St. Civic Association and NESCO. There are links to both of them here: http://www.indyeast.org/
Joe Bowling can steer you in the right direction. His phone number is right there on the web page.
Kevin, you know how to find them. Great stuff.
