The Riley Area Development website has a large collection of photos from Mass Ave dating from the late 1980s-to-1990, when it was just starting its rebirth. They are good to revisit from time to time to reset your mental frame about what is possible in a relatively short period of time. My favorite is the photo of the short-lived “Apartment Bridge” over East Street. Brutalist architecture that only a dictator could love.
I think the apartment bridge should have stayed.
Gives you hope for East 10th Street, doesn't it? I had no idea that Mass Ave. was so grim so recently (or ever, really).
That apartment bridge was scary and oppressive. Glad it's gone.
Nice photo series. Does anyone know if the First United Brethren Church was long vacant before it was demolished?
I agree with bhorg about the apartment bridge. It actually adds life to East Street, which is now flanked by parking lots on either side…NOW THAT'S OPPRESSIVE!! What a boring, lifeless street in such a prime area. Although it wouldn't seem practical these days, I would love to see future developments bridging Indy's wide streets more often.
